Home Networking Help

Hello Everybody.
I will warn you off the bat that I am completely new to this and am not too
familiar with a lot of computer jargon.

Here is my problem:
I set up a home network between my new PC and my old laptop. I have
everything properly connected am using a Cable/DSL Router from Linksys as my
Ethernet base station.

I used the Microsoft Networking Guide and followed all of the steps to the
"T". I didn't encounter any problems until I tried to view workgroup
computers on the Laptop. I can't seem to find my new PC on the Laptop. I
can see the Laptop when attempting to do this from my new PC.

James,

A good start with the diagnosis. Thanks.

Now, so we can start on an equal basis, what is the "Microsoft Networking
Guide"? Can you provide the URL, or directions if not online?

A problem with asymmetrical visibility generally involves the browser. The
browser IS NOT the program that you surf the web with. There are two common
problems which may interfere with the browser.

Check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous, on both computers.
Misconfigured / overlooked firewalls:

Registry setting restrictanonymous:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" from each computer. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

I downloaded the guide from Microsoft here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...16-db45-4aeb-962d-03ac1ee12d14&DisplayLang=en

The guide helped me to determine how I wanted to set up my network and what
I needed to buy in order to do so. It also took me step by step through the
set up wizards and was a great help until I encountered the problem I
mentioned earlier.

Just for the record. I am running McAfee on my new PC and have Norton on my
old Laptop. Would this cause a problem?

Both of my Windows Firewalls were "On". They are both now "Off" on both
computers.

I am not sure I understand the restrictanonymous, but followed the
instructions in the guide. On the laptop I could not find a "Additional
restrictions for anonymous connections" option and I could not even find the
"Local Security Policy" on my new PC.

Browstat Status for both computers

James,

Thanks for the Microsoft link. I added it to my Networking Guide, which has
other networking resources that you might want to check out too.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/networking-your-computers.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/networking-your-computers.html

Now, to your specific problem. If you're looking for information on the
restrictanonymous problem in a Microsoft document, I don't think you will find a
definitive answer. Microsoft is not yet fully aware of this problem, which is
where these forums come into play. We provide a more customised approach to
problems like yours.

Please read my article about the problem:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html

If you will look at the browstats above, you'll see that Boland has been elected
master browser by both computers, no problem there. But you can't resolve
Boland's name ("error = 53"), nor can you get the server list from it ("Unable
to retrieve server list from BOLAND: 53"). This, again, points to a problem
with either a firewall, or with restrictanonymous.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html

I asked you about antivirus products because both McAfee and Norton come bundled
with firewalls which some folks never realise until they spend a lot of time
debugging the actual problem.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html

Once we get this resolved, we can work on your Internet access. Right now,
you'll be best off IMHO treating these as two separate problems.

I just downloaded and ran WinSock XP Fix. That didn't seem to fix my problem.
When trying to "View Workgroup Computers" I received the following message:

***Office is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator is this server to find out if
you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.***

I'm running out of ideas...

James-

I too am a novice at this and showed up on this discussion because I am
having what appears to be the *exact* same problem as you. I have set up
Networking on my old desktop and new laptop (both running XP), and it looks
as if they network is running on each. However, I can only see the
connection one way (I see it on my desktop by not my laptop). Interestingly,
I am also running McAfee on one computer and Norton on the other.

Unfortunately I don't have any good solutions for you.... If you have
figured it out, please email me at (e-mail address removed). I'll do
the same for you. Thanks!!

Sincerely,
Natalie

Natalie,

There are many reasons for your problem. Please open a new thread, with your
problem identified, and using a unique and descriptive subject. It's to your
benefit to do that! We can help you better that way!

I appreciate your help. I'm not trying to use bad forum etiquette, but I do
not understand half of what your articles are refering to. I made it pretty
clear that I do not understand a lot of computer jargon and half of these
articles use acronyms that I have never heard of before. What I understand I
have tried. I don't really have too many alternatives left.

James,

I appreciate your wish to use proper etiquette. I suspect that my articles are
appropriate for maybe 50% of the audience here, too technical for maybe 25%
(including yourself), and too lightweight for another 25%. I'll do my best to
help you, if you'll work with me.

What issues to you need help with? Let's start there.

I am willing to do whatever it is you ask of me in order to better help you
resolve my problem. To be honest, if it doesn't involve Gaming, I am at a
total loss. I don't understand the restrictanonymous, I've tried to access
it as suggested, but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

Since I really don't know where to pick up, based on what information I've
provided, what do you think is the best next step that I should take? Do you
think it may help to restore the original settings that the older computer
came with?

I apologize if I don't respond anymore this evening, I am on the east coast
and have to work early tomorrow. Thank you for your help.

Jim,

You're not alone on the restrictanonymous bit. I don't really understand it
either. A surprising number of folks reporting problems here, similar to yours,
do turn out to be experiencing it though, so that's where I start.

The setting restrictanonymous is in the registry, which is the system settings
database. It has an address, which is [HKLM \System \CurrentControlSet \Control
\Lsa], which is an address similar to "C:\Windows\System32".

You need to use the Registry Editor, which is similar in structure to Windows
Explorer. You need to find the registry key [HKLM \System \CurrentControlSet
\Control \Lsa], and the value "restrictanonymous", within that key. The value
"restrictanonymous" should have a value of "0"; if it does not, you need to
change it to "0".

Please start with my articles, and follow the links. There are some articles
linked from mine, which may be more useful to you. If you read enough, what
looks like jargon will become useful.

I got it! To be honest I really don't understand what I was modifying, but
my network is now up and running. I am off to class for the evening, but if
you would like details of how I fixed the problem let me know and maybe it
will become helpful to somebody else. Thank you for all your help.

Sorry I spoke too soon. I am almost there. The network is now visible on
both computers, but when I try to access the New PC "Boland" from the old
laptop "Laptop" is get the following error:

***\\Boland is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.***

I deleted the nodetype, added an enableproxy and changed the
restrictanonymous settings. What steps do you think I should take next?

I tinkered with things a bit and got my file sharing working. Now the only
problem I have left is trying to print from my old laptop to the printer
connected to my new pc. I can see the printer as an option but get a
"Communiation not Available"

Thanks for all your help

James
