Home networking between home computer and laptop

Hello,

I have set up a home network for my home computer and my laptop.
Both are running Windows XP Home Edition 2002, Service Pack 2,
and Norton Antivirus 2005. When using my laptop I can see
my "home" computer on the workgroup, however I am unable
access it. Keep getting a message, not accessible, you may need
permission to access this network resource..contact your system
administrator. I am however able to access my laptop shared
files from the home computer.
I've run out of ideas..can anyone help?
Thanks,
WandaZoo

Maybe while sitting at the Desktop right click the folder you want to share
and choose the context menu item that says 'Sharing and Security...' Check
the boxes 'Share this folder on the Network' & also 'Allow other users to
change my files'. AND there is a link right there for help on
sharing/security which has some very simple tips.

you also need your same name and password from the laptop as a user on the
desktop

Went through the tips already, still no success..and my laptop name and home
name are the same. No passwords are set up on either computer.

compare the firewall and Norton setings on both computers.

usually is the norton security settings the ones that are overlooked.

Wanda,
Wanda,
I hope you get the right answers because I am having the same problem with
the same equipment and software you have, only it is the laptop that can see
the desktop, but doesn't show the folders in my network neighbor--the
desktop can access the laptop just fine.

Until someone can tell us what to do, I've found that I can access the
folders on the desktop thru the laptop by opening, a windows explorer window
and typing in the address bar "\\desk\music" for example. I have been
waiting/searching a month for an answer to this perplexing problem.

WandaZoo,
(I hope I am not double messaging to same group.)
I found The solution to my problem which I couldn't find anywhere
online and maybe it will help you.
(I have WinXP xp2 on both PCs and a wireless router.) Everything pinged
fine, same homegroup, correct PC names, no firewalls interferring, the
desktop was able to show My Network Places on the laptop, and access
its folders and view them; everything was right except when I would use
My network Places on the laptop. It would show the Desktop but when I
clicked on it, it would say I didn't have permission to
access,blah,blah.
Here is what I did:
I opened My Network Places on the laptop where it showed , made sure
the address bar was showing at the top of window (click on View,
Toolbars and checkmark Address Bar--you may have to slide it out to see
it, but it is there in a corner somewhere.)
In the address bar, I typed \\desk\My Music <file://\\desk\My Music>
Desk is the name of my desktop and, of course, My Music, is one of the
folders I wanted to access. It pinged the desktop and went to the music
folder on the desktop just perfect. Now, that may not work for you, but
it did for me.
Then I clicked on Folders at the top of the My Network Place so that a
left window opened like windows explorer with the folders showingdown
the left side. I clicked on \\desk/MyMusic <file://\\desk/MyMusic> and
drug it up to My Network Places and voila! when I went back to My
Network Places it appeared there as "deskmymusic on entire network,"
(don't ask me why it changes names) and now, I am able to access all
the folders on the desktop from the laptop because I did the same thing
with each folder I wanted to be able to access.
When I click on View workgroup computers, I still cannot see anything
when I click on Desk because of that "no permission blah blah" but I
can see all the shared folders on the desk on the laptop in My Network
Places, and in View, I chose Details, then Arrange Icons by > and chose
Computer and checkmarked Show in groups. Nice and neat.
Hope this helps you and others.
