home network troubles with Win XP Pro

J

JDM

I've use the networking wizard and created a network with
two computers, three ethernet cards, a hub and DSL cable
modem.

Host computer connects to internet and collects email.
Client computer connects to internet but cannot login for
email (what format should my FQDN look like???).

Host computer cannot see client computer. Client computer
can see host, but cannot access any shared resources
(files, printers).

It's been a very long weekend...any help appreciated!

Hi JDM,

We dont appear to have enough information about your setup to accurately
troubleshoot, we'll work with the assumption that your network is layed out
like the following:

DSL <--> HOST <--> HUB <--> Client

We can determine that your DSL --> HOST connection appears to be working
since you can receive mail and access the web. The problem appears to lie
between HOST <--> HUB <-->Client.

Your client and/or host computers may have firewalls enabled. This is ok,
but you will need to open the filesharing ports to enable connectivity. Make
sure the firewall is set on the correct interface (the public interface)
(see here for more:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/howto/homenet/default.asp)

Verify that you do have shares on both computers that are setup,
additionally verify that simple file sharing is enabled on both computers,
alternatively, if not using simple file sharing, verify that you have
credentials on both computers that will permit access to those folders.
