Make sure both are part of the same Workgroup. Also try disabling the
Firewall on both to see if you can connect to each. If you can, then you'll
need to configure the firewalls to allow connectivity to each other.

Make sure your login accounts on each computer have passwords.

You have either a browser or name resolution problem. Please provide "browstat
status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can analyse it. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Roger,

OK, that's a good start. The most common cause for this problem is a
misconfigured or overlooked firewall. Please read this article, and Follow All
Links.

And reply after my replies, as this could take some time.

OK, Roger. You're doing better. Keep at it, but not too hard. Replacing the
hard disk doesn't leave too much time or energy for anything else.

OK, Roger,

Let's start by giving me a picture of your setup. Please provide "browstat
status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a start. Identify the output
from each, so I know which is the desktop and which is the laptop. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Start by running "browstat status" in the command window. Exactly what do you
