home network problem

Joel

I am having trouble connecting a new computer to a network that has been
working fine. All computers can ping each other with an ip address. No
computer can ping the problem computer with its name. The problem
computer can not ping any other computer with their names.
All are using windows xp. Some home, some are professional. All have
service pack 2.
How should I go about resolving this problem or what other information
would you guys need to make a suggestion?

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on the new computer:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click Properties.
6. Click Advanced.
7. Click WINS.
8. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

Joel,

Is NetBT Enabled on each computer?

Look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer (the problem computer, and at least 2
others), and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and
follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):
