Home network problem

R

Rory

Hi

I've just set up a home network with a XP Home system and
an XP Pro system with a Netgear DG834 ADSL router. Both of
the computers have SP2 installed, the XP system has simple
file sharing enabled and both the firewalls are turned off.

I setup the network on both computers using the network
setup wizard.

The problem I have is that when using the xp home system
if I try to browse the xp pro system I am told there is a
problem and that I don't have permission to access this
computer. However I can access the share folder by going
to start -> run and entering "\\computer\share".

There are no problems with the XP pro system browsing the
XP home system.

How do set the permission to allow the xp home system to
browse the xp pro system?

Thanks in advance,

Rory

im haveing sorta the same problem,
could anyone tell me why all of my windows machines on my network can browse
each other in 'network nieghbourhood' but when they try and access my
computer(the one im on at the moment) it says either the network path was not
found, or you do not have permission to access?? but when i mannually go and
right click on my computer on one of my other windows machines and type
i.e.'\\Phoenix\sata3 (c)' - (phoenix is the name of my pc) - it suddenly
connects to it?? all the other machines can just use network nieghbourhood??
all machines are running windows xp..
i also have a linux machine running fedora core 2, when i try and mount my
windows share from my linux computer from the command line it says, sorry
connection refused?
i have firewall software on the windows machine that has the problem, but
its set to allow any traffic from my network card..ie.e my lan..

sorry this is no help/solution for your problem, but i thought i'd post with
you here, hopefully get a reply that can help both of us.. :)

here is the axect message, when trying to enter(by clicking) the computer
from within 'microsoft windows network' (computer is called phoenix):

"\\Phoenix is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions.
The network path was not found."

now by selecting map network drive and entering in the address i.e
'\\Phoenix\sata3 (C)' and clicking ok, i can reach the share..?

whats really wierd is that sometimes selecting the computer and then the
share from within 'microsoft windows networks' it works,, like just now it
came up with that i LEET -(leet is my workgroup)- 'Leet is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The network path was not found."
Then i click ok, and try clicking on the workgroup again and suddenly it
works?? im in and i can see both of my computers ,listed.
??
it does the same thing sometimes when trying to click/select the computer,
and also when you try and access the shares,(that come up after you clicked
on the computer)??

Strange, and it only seems to be this computer(Phoenix) which has that
problem on my network, all other computers can error free navigate each
others shares..

Check out knowledge base #290403 - "How to set security
in Windows XP professional that is installed in a
workgroup."

In my home network, my computer does something like that.
If I disable and reenable the network connection the
workgroup is accessible again. Feh!

Thanks for the reply but it doesn't seem to fix the
problem. My computer was a fresh install to WinXP Pro OEM.
Forceguest is set to 1 in the registry.

Here's the output from ipconfig /all if that helps...

Rory,

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), needs no install, and runs from the command
prompt. Just drop it onto a couple workstations, and run it.

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify each computer by name and operating system.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
