Home network:can access files on desktop to laptop, but not vice v

G

Guest

I have a network set up on Windows XP Home. My desktop is connected to a
router and the laptop is wireless. They both access the internet fine. I
can print from my laptop to a printer connected to the desktop. I can access
all files on the desktop from the laptop...but, I can not access any laptop
files from the desktop. I receive the following error, "You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied."

I have gone to the Properties section of the folders in my laptop that I
would like to share and have checked "Share this folder on the network" and
"Allow network users to change my files."

I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a friend that has the opposite problem! He can access the
desktop from the laptop but not the other way around. This has been a
very busy newsgroup with this issue!

Brian,

If you hung out in the Emergency Room at your local hospital, you'd think there
was an epidemic all the time. This is an emergency room for sick computers. A
lot of folks have trouble networking their computers, but, as I've said before,
you have to examine each case 1 at a time.

And, between the symptoms, diagnosis, and final problem determination, not 2
cases here are identical.

I'd rather hang out here than in the ER. ;)

Chuck,

Thanks so much for the reply. Unfortunately, I tried the 3 steps you
mentioned and I'm still having the same problem. Here is some background
info:

1) What am I doing and what am I seeing? I am trying to synch the Outlook
..pst files between my laptop and desktop. It was working fine before using a
3rd party utility until yesterday. Yesterday I messed around with the "Make
this folder private" check box and ultimately messed everything up. I was
able to recover everything and now have the network access working properly
except for this one issue. For example, I am able to access all files on my
desktop from my laptop. On my desktop, I can access the folders in "My
Documents" on my laptop. However, the .pst file resides in C:\Documents and
Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and I am
unable to access the Owner folder. I can access the .pst file for my desktop
from my laptop no problems.

2) Complete text of error message when I try to access the laptop .pst file
from my desktop: "Jimmys_laptop\Documents and Settings\Owner is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. Access is denied."

3) Describe the computers on your network.
Laptop: Windows XP Home Version 2002 SP2
Desktop: Windows XP Home Version 2002 SP2

4) How does each computer and each other network device connect? The desktop
is connected directly to the router. The laptop is connected to the router
wirelessly.

5) Scope of problem. Please see number 1.

6) I first noticed the problem yesterday morning after having messed with
the private folder setting. I tried to uncheck the private folder setting on
my laptop and was unable to. I logged in in Safe mode and changed somethings
around to get access to the folder and unchecked the private folder setting.
Now it appears that I can access all the files on my desktop from my laptop,
but am unable to access the .pst file on my laptop from the desktop in the
folder listed in #1.

7) ipconfig of both machines:

No sweat, Jimmy.

OK, your problem is that some files on your laptop are not accessible. Files in
"C:\Documents and Settings\(owner)\My Documents" are accessible, but
"C:\Documents and Settings\(owner)\Local Settings" are not.

With Windows XP Home, Simple File Sharing, and Guest authentication, you don't
have the tools you need to fix things, all of the time. See if this article
helps:

Cartman,
On a XP HOME PC, the following folders are not acessible by other PC's over a network for security reasons:
C:\Programs
C:\Windows
C:\ Documents and Settings

To share the contents of "Jimmys_laptop\Documents and Settings\Owner", you will need to right click the folder named "Owner"> Sharing & Security> Check the sharing settings that you want.
