Home Folders and VPN

R

Robert Brown

XP Pro SP1>Dial-up internet via ATT Globalnet>VPN>NT4 sp6
domain. Access to regular network shares is OK. Access
to home directory folders is erratic taking 5 times as
long to open or else appears to open but files and folders
are not visible. On the other hand I can open a command
prompt and DIR the home folder just fine. Normally the
network drives are assigned via NT 4 logon script. If I
disconnect the home folder and map it as reconnect at
logon I get the problem described in KB article 330519
which just makes the problem worse. Home Folder access is
fine when on the LAN at the office. Only when VPN does
the problem occur. NOTE: The home folders are set as
hidden shares. Could that be a factor?
ALSO: NT 4 Logon script does not appear to run during VPN
logon to the domain even on first logon attempt.

Hi Robert,
With regard to your logon script not being executed there are two ways that
you can solve this.
The first is to login to the domain through the WinLogon process (i.e. login
to the domain through the VPN connection).

The second is to get the dialer to execute your logon script for you. To do
this you could use Microsoft Connection Manager and have it execute your
logon script for you as a post-connect custom action.

This has the advantage of being run every time you connect to the VPN and is
independent of your login to the machine.

For more information on Microsoft Connection Manager have a look at
