hiding drives

Is it possible to hide custom mapped drives using 2000
server group policy. The only settings I can find hide C:,
D:, A: or all drives, etc. What if I map a Y: drive, how
can I hide this? possibly using the login script?

Nice try but as I stated you cannot specify custom drives
as in Y, J, L, etc. Look at the policy setting.
Appreciate the attempt though.

Actually, you can do this two ways:

1. Diretcly in the registry

http://www.tburke.net/info/regentry/topics/58871.htm
http://www.tburke.net/info/regentry/topics/93573.htm

NoDrives - blocks access to the drive
NoViewOnDrives - hides the drive

2. If you're in an Active Directory domain, editing the
GPO Admin Template (C:\Windows\inf\system.adm) to
let you choose drives at will through the OU GPO editor:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=231289

Just add the decimalvalue of the drive-combo you want
to hide/block in the [strings] and ITEMLIST sections
and you're off.

I edited the system.adm file under winnt/inf as
suggested. I added an entry to the ITEMLIST and added the
same entry to the strings, I followed the appropriate
syntax. The change is not being reflected in AD, I still
only have the same 7 dropdown selections. Do I need to
readd the system.adm file or something?

Are you trying to make this change to an -existing- GPO?
The system.adm in Windows\inf is just the source template, so
only if you generate a -new- GPO you will see the new option.

And by the way, you need to edit in the [string] as well. :)

To change an existing GPO, you need to look in Windows\
SYSVOL\sysvol and find the appropriate ID for the OU you
want to edit (just browse the textfiles in there, should'd
be difficult to recognise).

Hope it helps.

I edited the ITEMLIST and the [strings] for the
system.adm located in the folder matching the GPO ID. It
will not work, I even edited every system.adm for every
GPO (I know I didn't need to do this but I was getting
upset). It still won't work, it's like it is not
reflecting the changes.
