Hidden text in Word 2003

Problems with hidden text. Often (but not always), when I start typing in a
blank document in Word 2003, or when I copy and paste new text from another
document into Word 2003, the text is hidden. How do I prevent this?

Also, when Outlook 2003 uses Word 2003 to reply to messages, the original
message and my reply is also hidden text (I think), with dotted underlines.
How do I prevent this?

Basically - I never want hidden text...

This is a variation of the problem discussed in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm. Instead of
extraneous text in your Normal.dot, you have extraneous Hidden
formatting applied to the lone paragraph mark. The solution is the
same as set out in the article -- either modify Normal.dot directly or
replace it.
