hidden temporary internet files?

When I attempt to delete the temp. internet files (and
offline content) through the Tools option in the
browswer, IE hangs.
I was horrified to find I that I had almost 900MB of
temp. internet files, pretty much every temp int file
that had hit my drive since I bought the computer.
I'm running XP and went to the control panel, went into
Performance and Maintenance and used the disk cleanup
tool which caused the temporary internet file to APPEAR
empty, but when I go to the folder where the temporary
internet folder resides, and right click and choose
Properties on the temporary internet files folder, it
says there are 26 folders, and 35,000+ files adding up to
almost 500MB, though the folder appears empty.
What can I do now?

I solved the problem of how to see/get rid of the files
by logging in as a different user. This still didn't
allow me to delete the index.dat file, had to go into
Safe Mode for that.
