"Hid Inactive Icons" stopped working

The taskbar "hide inactive icons" feature just stopped working. (And I just
did a clean re-install a few weeks ago. [SP2, fully updated] SHEESH!) I've
tried turning it on and off; turned it off and rebooted, and then turned it
back on (by the check-box in Start/Properties/Taskbar.") Still doesn't work.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,

If you have installed XP a few weeks ago and do not use the system
frequently with a lot of programs installed then the function of hide
inactive icons doesnt fire unless you start using the programs regularly.

This behaviour depends on your usage pattern.

This computer is always on, and has ten programs (or drivers with taskbar
icons) that load on startup; and the hide-inactive-icons feature was working;
it just stopped working about two days ago. The little arrow at the left end
of the icons for running programs (notification area?) -- that hides and
reveals the icons -- has disappeared also.

Trust me; this is a malfunction. I've been running XP on this computer
since before SP1, and this is the first time I've had this problem. (Just
did the clean re-install to clean out accumulated dreck.)

BTW, no problems reported after complete scan by Norton Antivirus 2006.

Have you tried to change the notification behavior for each icon? Click
Customize, just right of the "Hide inactive icons" box, click the Reset,
or click each icon, try to change their behavior. I've never fooled
with it, but thought it looked like a good candidate. Heck, it might
jog the feature into submission..

Found a solution -- not that it makes any damn sense. Went to "Customize";
selected "Always Hide" for a few icons, and clicked OK. Then went back to
"Customize" and clicked on "Default." Voila -- back to normal. Go figure.

Thanks for continued interest.
