Hibernation sometimes not working

M

Martijn Saly

When hibernation doesn't work (about 1 in every 4 or 5 times) my desktop
pops back up and I see this yellow balloon "Insufficient resources to
complete the API" (translated from Dutch, might not be 100% accurate).

Why?

What I also want to know:
1) What kind of resources?
2) Why aren't there enough resources?
3) Why does it only fail *sometimes*?
4) What API? ExitWindowsEx?
5) Despite the reports all over the internet, why still no fix from MS?

This is my system:
Motherboard: ASUS P4C800 Deluxe
CPU: P4-3.00 GHz
Memory: 1,5GB (2x512MB, 2x256MB)
Harddisks: 36GB Raptor, 400GB DiamondMax (both SATA)
Optical: NEC ND3500A
Sound: SB Audigy2 ZS (onboard sound disabled in BIOS)
Network: Onboard 3Com 3C940
Video: Matrox Millennium G550

This is *not* the problem:
1) Fragmentation. The hiberfil and pagefile aren't fragmented.
2) Free space. I've got plenty of space and it's not even relevant.
3) Bad memory. If it were bad, I must have other serious problems, which I
don't. And memtest86 reports the memory being in perfect health.
4) The sound card. It came in later when the problem already existed.
5) The video card. I've had a few different video cards already. It
doesn't matter at all which one I use.

As always, the problem arose when I upgraded from 512MB to 1536MB of memory.
That seems to be the common denominator for each and every report of this
problem. But then again, when installing more memory, don't I get *more*
resources?

Oh yeah, my drivers are all neatly up-to-date. No worries there.

So, a little help please? This problem has been around for years now, and
frankly (to say it as respectfully as I can) I'm getting a little tired of it.

I'm sorry to kick this thread, but I really don't know what else to do.
I'm desperate on this subject, I'm pulling my hairs whenever I get this
error... and I don't understand what's so difficult about pumping memory
to disk, it's just so trivial.

So *please*, any help, any hints, any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated and remembered for eternity! :)

Apparently, WinXP hibernation doesn't work when you have 1.5 GB of
memory and up. I had the same problem when I upgraded my Laptop from
756 KB of memory to 1.5 GB.

Curiously, the problem solved when I downgraded my Laptop from 1.5 GB
to 1.25 GB

You didn't really solve the problem by doing that ;)

But it's strange. I thought the problem was with 1GB or more. Appearantly
the real cause lies deeper. Maybe the amount of memory modules is a problem?

Dear Martijn & friends:

Before 512 MB and 1 GB, both Crucial
After 1 GB and 256 MB, the same 1 GB module and the factory
original 256 MB module.

Please note that in they position, they are reversed, I don't know if
this matters.
