Hibernation - Insufficient System Resources

T

TheTman

Hello,

I am running Windows XP with SP2 on my laptop and sometime when I try to
hibernate I get the following error:

Windows - System Error
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API

Other times works just fine. I have plenty of memory (2GB) and diskspace
available (16GB).
Has anyone experienced this problem? Any ideas on how I can eliminate/fix
it?

Thanks,
TS

The issue indeed is widespread. The problem is that apparently no one at MS
has a laptop with 2GB of RAM AND Windows XP to test the fix. Apparently
everyone with 2GB of RAM would rather run Windows 2003.

BTW the Q330909 article mentions:
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 was ENHANCED to REDUCE the occurrence of
this behavior.

Maybe they should call the Windows 2003 folks, who I believe "enhanced"
their OS to "reduce" the occurence of "this behavior" to zero or so?

You're running a 16 bit application. See if wowexec.exe shows up in the
task manager and exit the offending app.

Maybe I found the soultion for this, but not very sure right now!
====> Add "/PAE" in boot.ini

Today I tried this setting on my IBM T41(Pentium M 1.5G, 2GB RAM, Windows
2003 w/ SP1), "hibernation" works very fine just like before!

Hope this also work on XP

I had this problem with Insufficient Resources after upgrading my
desktop computer from 512MB to GB. I'd get the message when trying to
Hibernate, and the Hibernate Tab would disappear from the Power
Options pane.

Found this on a search about /PAE :
/PAE
Causes Ntldr to load Ntkrnlpa.exe, which is the version of the x86
kernel that is able to take advantage of x86 PAEs. The PAE version of
the kernel presents 64-bit physical addresses to device drivers, so
this switch is helpful for testing device driver support for large
memory systems.

Hibernate works fine now on a Windows XP Home Edition

Well, it didn't last long. It appears that Hibernate wil work if you
select it right after booting up is finished. However, after using
several programs and try to Hibernate I get the same old Insufficient
Resources message.

I gave up on the /PAE switch in boot.ini.

The problem with Hibernate seems to be if you have 2GB (or more?) of
memory. So I decided to try and limit the amount of memory I have. I
was near the point of taking a 512MB stick out!

I used the following switch in boot.ini:

/BURNMEMORY=128

This has the effect of not using 128MB of my memory. So instead of
2048MB Windows "sees" 1920MB.

For the last 45 minutes I tried Hibernate four times, after using all
kinds of programs. Hibernate is working just fine now. Hope it keep
up.
