Hibernate and standby

I had to reinstall windows, and had to download from Microsoft something to
allow a standby button. My Power Options lists Hibernate and I have it
checked to hibernate when close monitor or press Power button. Nothing
happens. If I click Standby the screen goes blank, the pc runs at full
power, and I can't get the black screen to go away or turn off pc. Have to
hold down On button for about 20 seconds. I know this can't be good. I need
help. My Windows had Hibernate before I reinstalled.

When I updated to I. E. 7 last year, I started having problems with standby
and hibernate too. When I put my computer in stand-by it freezes and I have
restart. Hibernate seems to work ok as long as I don't use a screen saver
and don't have it set to go into stand-by after so many minutes of
inactivity. When I have to walk away from the computer for an hour or more
and don't want to shut it down, I manually put it in hibernate.

You should have solved the freezing problem so that you could standby AND
hibernate.

Is there any possibility that you changed hardware, especially the video
card?

Hibernation might not work if the hardware is not current. For me, my system
BIOS is not current so the new video card I have is not totally supported.
Hibernation stopped working for me a couple of weeks after I installed the
new card. I have a desktop system, not a laptop, but hibernation worked for
me before I installed the video card. So you might have a similar problem.
