I'm trying to help my mother out...this is what happens to her computer.
She turns it on and then the Toshiba welcome page comes up and then all of a
sudden another screen comes up and says, " we apologize for the inconvenience
but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change
might have caused this ( she has not done anything new to her computer) if
your computer stops responding restart it unexpectedly or it will
automatically shut down to protect your files or folders. Choose last known
good configuration to reverse to the most recent settings that work. If a
previous staret up attempt was interrputed due to a power failure or because
the power or reset button was pressed or if you aren't sure what caused the
problem, chose windows normally: safe more, safe mode with networking, safe
mose with command promt...last known good configuration (your most recent
settings that worked) She has tried pushing all these and then it comes back
to the same screen.......Shes unplugged it from the modem...etc...turned it
off, nothing even lights up on her wireless card....Can someone please help
me so I can help her out! I (We) appreciate it very much!

This is a Windows XP Professional OS and she has no access to any toolbars
or anything just that one screen that keeps popping up. We are both not
techies so its foreign to us.....shes also in another state than I am and she
tried calling for support but cannot understand the people she keeps getting
conncted to. Any help is greatly appreciated!

well, since you can't get to the
desktop, then one of the things
that might help is to do a windows
system repair.

I have seen
modems create this kind of
a problem when it is left
connected/on during a shutdown.
but now a days, it could be
a meriad of causes...

to restore the windows system files
that were corrupted or replaced with
incompatible files, boot from the windows
setup cd, select new install, point to the
o.s that it finds already on you hd, and
say yes to repair it.

this is the easier method and will
only affect "window system files"

g.l.....

Open the case and remove the wireless card, the modem and any device
plugged into the usb ports. Try starting again. If this works, try
adding the devices, one-at-a-time.

I've been getting the same exact problem. Then when it boots, nothing will
open or work - get the "hour glass". I thought it was due to some software I
just downloaded off of mininova.net. I posted my issue in post titled "XP
Crashed?" Still don't know what to do!
