Help: XP SP2 Boot Stops at MUP.sys

Hi,

I'm having a booting problem with Windows XP SP2. I can't get it to boot at
all normally (stops right as it would turn on the VGA card--hmmm) and it
stops after loading MUP.sys in safe mode.

I know the much-maligned MUP.sys is not causing the stop--it's whatever
comes after it. So, I've used the recovery console to try and fix things, but
most of the functions there scare me. I'm not sure what FIXMBR or similar
commands will do to my data--so I don't want to try them.

Unfortunately, my OEM XP CD does not have an in-place repair function for
the already-installed XP. I don't want to lose my data--but I do want to
actually be able to access it sometime soon. I have backups, but they're a
bit old and we loaded lots of digital photos after the holidays, so I don't
want to do a clean install.

Any solutions? What am I missing or doing wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

If you have access to another computer, you can remove your HDD and
connect it to that computer (suing an external USB enclosure if it's
easier for you) and copy your files. Then you can afford to reformat
your drive.

Before I even read this, that's exactly what I did. I'll just rebuild the
machine after I've got all my files transfered over. This was a real vexing
issue, with a failry straightforward, if a bit involved, indirect solution.

Just a tip for future problems... Why not partition your disk and keep
your data on the separate partition? That way you can format the
operating system partition, reinstall, and your data will still be
there?

Great idea to reformat the disk but what do you do about a new license after
you are already registered?
