First, a short explanation of the problem:
I have 2 XP computers that are both part of the same domain. They need
to share folders with one another. However, when at home (not in the
domain) they are unable to access the other computer's shares as there
is no domain controller to confirm the account user and password.
OK, here's a long explanation of the situation:
I have 2 XP computers.
One (XP1) was on domain: Office
The other (XP2) was on domain: Warehouse
The user and password, however, were the same for both computers. Now,
these are my CEOs computers. He keeps them mostly at home.
XP2 was really just a backup computer. However, it has a folder that was
shared out to XP1. XP1 used offline folders to always have access to
the files in that folder.
Now, despite the fact that they were both on different domains, and that
they were at his home with no domain controller, they never had any
problem with sharing.
Wednesday (Oct 6) I put SP2 on both and rebooted. All possible
interconnectivy ceased. There was no way for either computer to gain
access to shares on the other.
I tried:
a) adding the Everyone group to the share with full access, but no luck.
b) I added Guest w/ a password to the share with full access, but no
luck either.
So, in the end I decided to take the 2 computers to work and add them to
the same domain (FINALLY!).
Now, XP1 and XP2 are both on domain: UNITED (NB! a new domain)
So, at work in the domain, everything is working perfectly!!!!
I added, of course, the user to the listing of users as well as his
domain to each computer.
So, I take the computers back to his house, and what happens!? The
computers will not allow access to any share. They keep complaining
that there is no domain controller to confirm the user and password.
Again, I tried the Everyone and Guest method, but this did not work.
In the end I decided that this must be some SP2 thing, so I uninstalled
SP2. Nonetheless, I still had the same error.
So, now I am totally lost as to the possible reason and solution.
Any ideas.
