Help with XP recognizing new Hard Drive

W

Wade S.

I have recently purchased a new Maxtor 200 gig hard
drive. I have received some conflicting advice from
friends. I was told by one source that Windows XP would
not recognize a hard drive of this size. Another one said
I would have no problems.
I use Windows XP Home. I have installed and formatted
hard drives 60 and 80 gig in size and am familiar with
the procedure. Is there anything unusual or different
that I will need to do while installing and formatting
this 200 gig drive for Windows XP (or the BIOS)to
recognize the full size?

TIA!

Basically I feel you ought to ensure that your mainboard
can recognize a HDD of this size. If it can, Win XP will
not have any problem if the File System is NTFS,
otherwise, you might need to create many smaller
partitions in FAT32.

This is from another post:
This, being greater in size than 128 GB (binary, 1024 ^^3) or 137
billion, needs the extended 48 bit LBA in order to be able to use
beyond that point. This needs

Needed electronics in the drive (which it will have)

Corresponding electronics controllers in BIOS and , and a BIOS to use
them. As the BIOS only sees 137, this is missing, and you need at least
a BIOS upgrade, and possibly an add-on controller card

Windows XP with SP1

Guys,

Thanks so much for the advice. It sounds as if I need to
determine of my BIOS-motherboard will support it. I will
check on that. Thanks again, so much for the replies!
