Help with XP and scanners

Some time ago, the scanner portion of my Epson CX5400 all-in-one stopped
working under XP SP2 (I suspect it was after an automatic update). It printed
OK but wouldn't scan. Uninstalling and reinstalling Epson software made no
difference, nor did new versions. When connected to an old laptop running
Win 98SE, both the printer and scanner worked fine.
I've now hooked up a new Canon PIXMA MP460 (also connected via USB) and I
see similar behaviour: it prints and copies, but it won't scan. For example,
Photoshop says "unable to communicate with scanner...", then "could not open
the TWAIN source...". Any suggestions?

If you are able to copy, the scanner part is working fine. You just can't
open the scanner in an application.

Do a search of your computer for a file called twain.mtx. If it is in the
temp folder, delete it, reboot and try the scanner again.

Please report back to the forum.

Steve, thanks for the idea. I did the search, and twain.mtx is nowhere to be
found in my computer. Any ideas about what to do next?

Are you sure that you are using XP drivers? Worth a visit to the Canon
website and download the latest driver for your machine.

Downloaded the latest drivers from the Canon website. When I try to install,
a dialog box says that there is already a newer version installed, and
aborts. This is plausible, since the unit is brand-new, and it sometimes
takes a while for customer-support websites to catch up.
I'm stumped. He-e-e-lp!
