help with usb probs

this is a pretty new system. I use external usb drives.
occassionally they are not recognised in my computer.
previously saved documents cannot be opened form Word either.

i do not have one of those "It's safe to remove the USB device now"
icons either, even if it's one of those sessions when the device(s)
are recognized.

pretty weird. I got a usb scanner which shows up consistantly, and if
i connect my kodak camera it is detected too.
but not the external drives.
help!!

I suggest that you plug in your external USB Drive to a known good port. Maybe
your front ports are not connected internally ?
Your new hardware will be discovered and the system will give you the
instructions as you go along.

I suggest that you find a friend and take the USB drive to him/her and get
allowed to plug it in - I would only allow someone I knew to do so and only
while I was watching - so be nice.

This was pretty easy to resolve. disconnected all the USB
accessiories; went into device manager and uninstalled everythingh
under Universal Serial Bus section.
rebooted and recopnnected all the devices one by one. They were all
recognised, and are running. The 'safe to remove usb device' icon is
back too.
thanks for the moral support!
