help with unistalling a program

so here's my deal...my boyfriend got an iphone now when he plugs in the phone
to the computer it won't recognize the phone (initially did) so apple support
told us to uninstall the program and reinstall....problem is ... IT WON'T
UNINSTALL ... when i try to uninstall it says it will take approx 2 hours ...
left it til it said 1 min remaining and it stayed on "1 minute remaining" for
hours!!! any suggestions?????????

Try reinstalling the program over the existing program. If that does not
correct the problem, then try uninstalling again.
