Help with SpyBot 1.3

D

Dannie

Uninstalled 1.2 and d/ld 1.3 and after doing scan I got following: Alexa
Related 1 entry, DSO Exploit 5 entries, and Fun Web 15 entries.
OLd version 1.2 would show me more info when I highlighted line but this
version doesn't. Can someone clue me in how to get more info like old
version did (pop up)?
Also Fun Web Products, what is this?

Any advice certainly appreciated.
Dannie
PS on 1.2 I let Alexia Related alone but DSO and Fun Web are new to me
although I had previously updated AOL Messinger.

The "DSO" exploits are an old IE vulnerability that is no longer a threat on a
"patched" machine, if you regularly visit Windows Update, you may safe add
this detection to the Ignore List in SpyBot.
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=threats&detail=13

You should dump the Alexa related file, SpyBot installs a dummy in lieu.

"Fun Web Products" *is* Spyware, all or most of which can only be detected
by running a Spyware removal utility called "HijackThis".

You can add more details by going into the setup and enabling "expert" mode. There really isn't any need for you to have more details though. Spybot 1.3 RC5 has been exhaustively tested and if it says to delete something then do so without fear. I also have and use AdAware in conjunction with Spybot. I don't like Siljaline's statement or comment about HijackThis. It is very misleading. It doesn't just find Browser Help Objects (BHO's) that may or may not be part of a spyware\adware program but also display's legitimate BHO's like IE Spell and Zoom In and Zoom Out that enhance the functionality of IE6. I do not recommend this program for the beginner. It is meant for advanced users that know what they are doing. I also highly recommend using free programs like SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. I would also get a free pop-up blocker. I have XP Home SP2 and Microsoft will be adding enhancements like a pop-up blocker as well as improving the firewall. SP2 should be available for general release this fall I imagine. Don't quote me on that though.

I second these comments. I have all these running on my machine and working
splendidly. I run MyIE2 browser and that virtually eliminates anything in
the way of adware. AdAware rarely finds anything now that I use this new
browser.

Greetings --

The DSO exploit was patched long ago by IE Cumulative Update
MS02-015, in March of 2002. If you've installed this specific patch,
or any subsequent IE Cumulative Updates, or Service Pack 1, you're
safe. It would appear that the latest version of Spybot S&D is only
checking for Internet zone settings in the registry that could be used
as work-around protection, and not for the presence of any corrective
patches. Hopefully, the makers of Spybot will soon fix this bug.

Hi Bruce. Thanks for the information. I am somewhat of a novice (I really
am) and this new version of SpyBot 1.3 has me somewhat alarmed when it
reports Fun Web 15 entries. It shows the folder and then what looks like
registry entries which I am totally unfamiliar with. I did go into explorer
and found a FunWebProducts folder in the program section and when I clicked
on properties it gave me a jan 21st2004 date. I checked my activity file (I
try to make a note if I d/l something) and that date comes up clean. Have
you worked with SpyBot 1.3? I'd like to let SpyBot do its thing but
certainly do not want to be in worse shape since I'm not sure this FunWeb
folder is doing anything. Any of your wisdoms would certainly be
appreciated.

"Fun Web" is a company that provides a lot of cutesy front-ends
for spyware and ad-ware. I wouldn't hesitate for a second in letting
Spybot remove all of those entries.
