Help with P4B533 BIOS Settings for P IV 2.80 GHz

Hi all,

I installed a new Mainboard (ASUS P4B533) with a Pentium IV 2.80 GHz and PC
2100 266 MHz Memory. Now my problem might be a simple one, but how do I get
the BIOS to recognize the CPU correctly? I have only two options, one is to
set it to 1400 MHz or to set it to manual, then I have the multiplier set to
14x (can't be changed) and the external Bus to 100. When I set the external
to 200 (thinking 200x14 would give me the 2.8 GHz) the system won't start. I
also updated the BIOS to the latest available (1015), but that didn't help.
Also in XP it recognizes the Processor as a 2.80 GHz, running at 1.41 GHz
:-(

Can anyone tell me how I can set up the BIOS so it runs at it's designated
speed? I don't want to overclock it, just at least give me the power I
bought :)

Any help would be appreciated..

The P4B533 doesn't support the 2.8 (200 FSB) processor. You've got the wrong
motherboard, and crap RAM.

The board will run stable at 150 FSB (and probably a bit above that, but I'm
not sure how far above that).

To get the max possible mhz from that cpu on this board, go into bios and
set:

RAM to 3:4
AGP/PCI bus locking to 66/33
FSB to 150

That will get your cpu to 2.1Ghz. Your RAM will be at 150 * 3/4 * 2 =
225mhz (ie. within spec).

Start pushing the FSB up 3mhz at a time from there. Your RAM will be out of
spec once the FSB gets above 177.

Make an image backup of your hard drive before starting, because to run this
cpu on this board at anything decent you are going to be overclocking the
motherboard heavily.

Thanks for the quick answer. However, that surprises me. The specification
of the board notes that it supports HyperThreading Pentium 4 Processors up
to 3.0 GHz. So why is it that the 1.4 seems to be the max one and my 2.8 is
alredy too high?

On a second note, what MB would you suggest for that processor (and taken
that I have to get new RAM with it as well...)?

Thank for replying though

As Dan said, it supports the hyperthreaded 3.06 Ghz cpu (533 FSB). You have
an 800 FSB cpu, which
is a much newer model.

The best board to get is the Asus P4C800-E. I think you'll be very happy
with this board. Make sure you get the P4C800-E (not the P4C800).

You'll probably even be able to run your old RAM in the P4C800-E at 2/3
until you can afford some better RAM.

With that cpu, and some good high speed RAM, you'll be able to overclock to
3.2Ghz or more. Just
make sure you lock the AGP/PCI buses to 66/33 before you increase the FSB,
and backup everything before
you start.
