Help: Win2K3 server folders marked read-only !!!

M

MLK

Under the properties General tab, each folder is marked read-only (the box
is checked off, but appears in gray).

It is possible to remove the checkmark but it comes back each time you look
at the properties again.

The upshot of this is that the end users can't save anything on our new file
server, despite having the right NTFS and share permissions!

Is this a known problem? Is there a way to get rid of the mysterious
read-only checkmark ??

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

This article should explain and help you out,

You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326549

From the article:
Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a
folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories,
and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder
with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer. The Read-only and
System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the
folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view
customized by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts,
Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the
Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box. As a result, Windows
Explorer does not allow you to view or change the Read-only or System
attributes of folders. When a folder has the Read-Only attribute set it
causes Explorer to request the Desktop.ini of that folder to see if any
special folder settings need to be set. It has been seen where if a network
share that has a large amount of folders set to Read-only, it can cause
Explorer to take longer then what is expected to render the contents of that
share while it waits on the retrieval of the Desktop.ini files. The slower
the network connectivity to the share the longer this process can take to
the point where Explorer may timeout waiting for the data and render nothing
or appear to hang.

Yeah, I'd seen links to that article before but it does not address either
the true cause or the solution. Our problem had something to do with not
giving Everyone Full Control share permissions at the top share level. In
2k3 the default is Read-only for Everyone.

Thanks.

Hi,

Can you share with us what permissions did you give the user on share and
NTFS? Any other configuration details you can share with us?

Did you use Effective Permissions to find out what permissions on NTFS user
or group have?

Which has nothing at all to do with the folder attribute being marked
as read only. If you're trying to change the share permissions then
going to the General tab of the folder properties is the wrong place.
Try the share tab instead.

I didn't change the share permissions from the General tab. All I did was
elevate the Everyone group from Read to Full Control from the Sharing tab.
Users can now save to their folders, despite the fact that the Read-only is
still checked off on the General tab, so I'm assuming it's got everything to
do with top-level share permissions.

You're assuming that what's got everything to do with top-level share
permissions? I'm having a hard time following what you're talking about
in this thread...
