HELP!!! Unknown Partition, Computer DEAD!!

J

joannestevenson

I have tried to resize my partition on my Hard Drive using Partition
Magic 8 and it now wont boot. The partition is there but windows XP
will not repair the partition as it says it is an unknown partition

We have tried fixmbr and fixboot these did not work. When we have run
setup the option to repair Win XP is not present only the option for
formatting or repartitioning the drive.

As my data is stored on this drive I do not want to do this, is there
any way (anything at all!!) of recovering from this situation or
retrieving my files?

Any help would be much appreciated?

Hmm..
So you decided to use Partition Magic to change up the partition
sizing/layout on your computer - clicking on the warnings about backups and
the likes - but not heeding them?

You may be able to perform a repair installation to fix things or use the
Ultimate Boot CD for Windows to access your files.. But then again - you
might not.

Hi Joanne,
putting your hard disk in another machine as a slave will allow you to get
your data back only if the partition it is on is sound. Another approach
is to leave the hard disk where it is and install a new copy of Windows XP
on the machine, but that supposes you have more than one partition set up. I
would suggest you first try a program called Partition Table Doctor
http://www.ptdd.com/ You will need another PC to load it on because it is
necessary to create a boot disk. The program is $49 around £30. There is a
demo for download but obviously this doesn't fix damaged partitions. I have
pasted below some bumph from their website

Chelsea

Partition Table Doctor is the data recovery software for hard disk partition
recovery, which is used to recover partition table and fix boot sector for
hard disk. This versatile tool would automatically check and repair the
master boot record, partition table, and the boot sector of the partition
with an error, to recover the FAT16/FAT32/NTFS/NTFS5/EXT2/EXT3/SWAP
partition on various hard disk drives. It can create an emergency floppy
disk or a bootable CD to recover the bad partition even if your operating
system fails to boot. Partition Table Doctor manages for MS-DOS, Freedos,
Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003.

Use the recovery/restoration diskette that Partition Magic prompted you
to create before you went forward with the changes to the partition.

I tried to resize the partition that windows is installed on (not
knowing that windows was installed on it!) and it has crashed somewhere
along the way and messed its own head up! There is no partition
therefore i dont think using it as a slave will work.

Ive decided to send of my hard drive to a data recovery company, if
anyone can get the data off then they can.

Ill let you know how it goes!!

Joanne get a quote from the data recovery company before committing
yourself-you could be talking about a four figure sum here! Any computer
specialist should be able to get most of your data files back. There are
programs that will do this. Its not practical to tell you what they are as
they are very very expensive and impractical to buy for a single use, but
there should be a technician or consultant in your area who has them.

Hi Chelsea,
Ive found a company that charges 99 pounds as a set fee no matter how
much data they recover. They also say that its no fix no fee and they
will return the drive back to me free of charge if the recovery is
unsucessfull.
The web address is: http://www.easyrestore.co.uk/harddrivedata.htm they
seem really quite inexpensive compared to alot.
I will let you all know how i get on and whether they are able to
recover the data.
Joanne :)

Greetings,

In your situation I suppose Active@ partition recovery tool should
help. It worked great for me and never failed before, and always was
able to bring lost or corrupted partitions back to life, even though I
considered some of them completely dead.

Hello,

EASEUS DataRecoveryWizard utility can help. Speaking about me, it was
easily able to restore deleted, lost file and unformat drive,
so I think you will also find it quite useful. Really recommended
tool, give it a try.
