Windows XP SP2. When trying to start the Help and Support Service, the
following error occurs:

Could not start Help and Support Service on local computer.
Error 126: The specified module could not be found.

How do I re-install files needed for this service?

Hi TaurArian

Have tried all the ways of reinstalling help and support that I can find, as
per Ramesh etc. All to no avail. Is there any way of finding what the missing
'specified' module is, in error 126?

I have a feeling that originally Help and Support stopped working after I
installed an old version of Visual C, since uninstalled, but the problem is
still there. Could it be due to an incompatible version of ODBC data sources?

I have all the essential updates installed and would rather live with no
help and support at this stage, rather than do a complete rebuild.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi AH,

Try this method:

Click Start, Run and type "%systemroot%\inf". Right-click the file
PCHealth.inf file and choose "Install". Insert your XP CD when prompted. If
you have Service Pack 2 installed, be sure to point to the
%Windir%\i386\ServicePackFiles folder, or insert your slipstreamed XP CD (if
available).

If that does not help, run "SFC /SCANNOW", which will restore missing system
files.
