Help. Problem with network

I

Inga

Hello,

I'm working in local network on Win 98. Today I don't have access to www,
outlook, direct conect, etc. Our IT administrator said, that is a problem
with network connection, network adapter, cable, etc. I know he is wrong
becouse I can see all computers, printers in my work group. When I type ping
www.yahoo.com it doesn't work but when I replace it with correct IP number
it works. I can access web sites only by typing thei IP adressess. In others
computers in my office there is no such problem. What could happend with my
Win 98? Is that problem with server in my network or with my Win 98. What I
should do? Please help me. Please reply to my email address:

You are not getting DNS (name) resolution. Check your DNS settings (if they
are manually entrered). There is a possibility of a "DNS Hijack", where some
malware has re-directed all DNS queries to some server that uses the
information to monitor the sites you visit. In that case you may need a good
dose of some anti-spyware, and possibly a winsock repair (it might be
easier/cheaper to just re-install in that case depending on your level of
experience).

There are also many other possibilities, depending on your network's setup
and complexity. See if you can ping the DNS server. Your tool set is limited
on Windows 98, but you can download (on one of the computers that can get to
the internet) some free 3rd party network tools (like tracert, nslookup,
etc) to help you diagnose the problem. Google and ye shall find :).
