HELP PLEASE!!

I've just discovered windows movie maker and I'm trying to make movies of my
new baby. I have edited footage that is saved on my PC as mpeg files but
every time I try to import them the importing process fills the first line of
green and then just freezes. When I click cancel the whole program freezes.
It's happened every time I've tried. Does anyone know what to do here?

Convert them to AVI first then import the AVI files into Movie Maker.
WMM does not work well with MPEG files.
