Hi All,

i am attempting to hyperterminal into my new cicso 3550 switch but keep
getting a problem "Unable to open COM1. Please check your port settings".

Is there any way i can communicate with the switch? I have bought the switch
second hand and do not know the IP address or password to Telnet in so the
only other way is via hyperterminal. I dont even know if there is an IP
address or password assosiated with the switch. Again is there anyone that
can help me get into the switch in order to configure it for use. I am a
complete novice when it comes to cisco commands etc.

Any advise would be very greatly received.

Kind Regards.

Make sure your com ports are enabled in your BIOS (CMOS). Go to device
manager and locate the ports, make sure they are enabled and working. Make
sure you are using a "rollover" (Not a crossover, Not a straight-thru) cat 5
cable into a Cisco adapter, or the Cisco one-piece console cable. Make sure
you are plugged into com1, that it is set 9600 8-bit - no parity - no
handshake (or however Cisco says).
