HELP PLEASE!!!!!!

I am a 16 year old and I don't know much about computers and I need
help!! On my "Windows Task Manager", "processes" window, there are
about 55 different processes going on and I have absolutely no idea
what they all are. So I don't know if I should end these processes,
whether all, or just some that is harmful or dangerous to the computer.
But then I don't know which is important and I dont want to end the
wrong processes for the safety of my laptop. SO i started google
searching what various different "Image Name" or symbols meant. And "
ati2evxx.exe" and "atiptaxx.exe" are just 2 of the 55 examples. I dont
know whether these 2 are harmful or not. I tried reading some of the
messages left on this group message board and some other explanations
but I do not understand. Could anyone pleeeeeasseee help me, so I
understand what they are and what i have to do if it IS harmful to get
rid of it! Also if anyone is so kind to give me some advice or any
instructions on what I have to do for the rest of the 55 processes, I
would be very grateful and appreciative!!!!

P.S. Are 55 processes that are running on my laptop normal? or is it
TOO MUCH and A LOT of processes? I dont know because i have no idea,
but I THINK it is slowing my normally fast laptop down by a lot!

Personally I recommend you leave it all alone. Service/processes is not
something to mess with if you don't know what your doing and unless your
running into a problem. As for 55 things running I cant say one way or
another on it being too many, kind of depends on what all you have loaded.
The ATI ones you mention you most likey NEED if you have an ATI card, one is
for enabling hotkey polling and is also I believe needed for ATI's CCC to
properly run. Some ppl do like to steamline what services are running, for
improved game performance and whatnot, but as many things are interelated
services wise turning off one might actually also cause something else to
not work. If your worried you have some hijacker items give programs like
Ad-Aware a try and also maybe visit
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp and use their free
online virus scanner. Either way unless your actually having a problem your
probably better off not messing with your services and such untill you've
read some more.

I am pretty sure those two ati processes you mention are to do with the
hotkey poller. 55 processes running on startup is not an enormous
amount, but then again its not small. I have trimmed my desktop down to
have just 25 processes at startup (including task manager to view them).
My partenrs dell has about 35 processes from memory as laptops have a
few more.

Make sure that your virus checker is up to date, make sure that you have
run Spybot and/or Adaware as well (making sure that they are updated to
have the latest spyware definitions). Run those regularly to make sure
your system is free of viruses and spyware.

Also have a look in Start/All Programs/Startup to see if anything is
running there that you don't want to run.

Anything in the system tray (down the bottom right by the clock) is also
a process - you may have things there that you don't need (like the
winzip quick picker or realplayer startup processes are things that I dump)

Finally, to find out what each process is, just have task manager open,
then type the name of each process into google, often sites like
http://www.liutilities.com will come up as the first link which contain
a brief drscription about the process and whether it is harmful or not.

55 is an awful lot but then I have a lot of MS services shut off. I
have 26 services running right now. What you do is type the name of
the file into Google search engine and you will get info on that file
and you will know from that if it is a normal service or not. Go to
the below url about services and follow the guide as to what services
you can safely stop from running. I use this guide but everyone's
machine is slightly different and you may have a few different
services running. For example; I have two services running that are
for Perfectdisk defragmenter which you probably won't have. If any of
your task processes turn out to be fishy then you may have to look
into getting rid of spyware/adware/trojans etc. Then go here for help.

p.s. sorry, I meant I have 26 total processes listed in task manager
running and not 26 services.
