help please - xp sp2 & non-connection to BT internet

sending this on behalf of a mate....

He has WinXP & recently let SP2 install itself. Now when he clicks the big
blue E (Int Explorer) it won't connect to his BT homepage (I'm not sure what
error message he's getting).
However, he can send/recive e-mails and if he clicks on a weblink within an
e-mail, it connects OK to that link.

Any thoughts that would help him, please?

could the cure be as easy as going into internet optoins and resetting the Home page (= default start page) to teh old bt
startpage??
