Help!! Password Pop Up Overload

G

Gemsbok

Hi

I'm asking a question for a friend who only recently got a computer with
Vista & windows Mail on it.

He has a POP email account (freeserve.co.uk) and when he clicks on
Send/Receive Mail button it comes up with the box asking for his username
(his email address) and his password.

He types in the correct details then 2 seconds later it asks him again, then
2 seconds later it asks him again. This can go on for ages til it
acknowledges his username and password.

The obvious solution is probably for him to get a normal email address like
hotmail or msn but he really needs to keep his freeserve account.

I have made sure he has ticked the remember password and username check box
and it still doesn't make it difference.

Does anyone know of a problem whereby windows mail constantly keeps asking
for your username and password?? he's at the hair-pulling stage now

Any help would be great..or a download i can send him to fix it

Thanks

Stephen

That problem is typically caused by running a non-compatible antivirus.
Norton, McAfee and Trend Micro antivirus programs are not compatible
with Windows Mail. Those should be uninstalled and replaced with a
more compatible antivirus. Acceptable free ones are:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

Another option is to upgrade Windows Mail to Windows Live
Mail. The latter is not so prone to bad effects from antivirus
programs.

Forgive me entering this discussion. I do so as much in the spirit of
enquiry as anything else.

I have seen a number of posts where you have given the same advice about
Norton being incompatible with Windows Mail. I have been running WM for at
least a month now on a laptop running Norton Internet Security 2007. I have
had no problems at all. And before you say it: NIS 2007 did come out with a
Vista compatible version. I use the 2007 program because it blocks
advertisements on websites: real boon if you don't like flashing things while
you are trying to read a newspaper article. The 2008 edition doesn't have
this feature.

Anyway, I should be interested to have your views on why Norton is
incompatible.

Most versions of the Norton antivirus program eventually cause problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately - it often takes months.
Keep using them on the same machine, and you'll eventually see such
problems.

There's a quirk in Windows Mail that often makes it forget the password
if you click Apply in the same session that you put the checkmark before
Remember password. If this case, you need to start Windows Mail,
then click Tools, then Accounts, then the account with this problem,
then Properties, then Servers. If it still remembers the checkmark before
Remember password, don't change this checkmark. Instead, click at
the end of the dots for the password, backspace over them, then type
the password, and click Apply. Since you haven't changed the checkmark,
clicking Apply is safe. Click on OK, then Close.

Also, tell him to watch which letters in his username and password are
CAPITAL and which are lowercase.

Then you've been lucky. I've heard of people who dept using Norton for a
couple years, but it eventually gets just about everyone.
