Help old private folder

I had changed my "my documents folder" to d:\my
documents. Then I made My Documents private. A while
after this, my system became very unstable, to the extent
that a reinstall was needed (after attempting a repair,
which did not work). I therefore reinstalled xp home on
my primary partition by reformatting c:, as all my
important files were in d:\my documents and would not be
affected by the reformatting. However, now I return to
windows to find d:\my documents is still private, but to
my old account, which ceases to exist, and I can find no
way to uccess it!!! How can I access all of my important
files?!! Help!
