Help! My volume control is gone!

All of a sudden the volume icon is missing from task bar. I go to "Taskbar
and Start Menu Properties" and under System Icons/Select which system icons
to show and the choice for Volume is dimmed out and cannot be chosen. If it
makes any difference I went back to a system restore point yesterday - the
icon has ALWAYS been there so that shouldn't have affected it.

Go to Control Panel > Device Manager and verify that the sound
controller is enabled.

I didn't mean to imply the sound isn't working, it works fine. If I go to
the help section & queery "adjust sound volume" it gives me a link that
pulls up the adjustment settings and I can adjust it fine. But I certainly
don't want to go through that everytime. I just need to get the "adjustor"
to show in the system tray. I should be able to just click that option in
"Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" but it is dimmed out.
