I am trying to backup my windows mail files but one particular file,
WindowsMail.MSMessageStore, is just too big. What is it? What does it do?
All of my actual mail messages are held in other directories so what's in
here? Id I didn't back it up would windows mail be able to recreate it from
the subdirectories of mail? TIA.

It contains the index of the other files, plus some other information about
them. To remove references to deleted files, click on Tools, then Options,
then Advanced, then Maintenance. If there's no check mark in the box
before Compact the database on shutdown every, click on this box. Click
on Close, then Apply, then OK. When it asks if it should compact the
database (which it will now and then), click on Yes.

Have you tried to go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Maintenance ->
Clean Up Now?
