Help - Installation Error

B

Barry Watzman

I am having extreme difficulty installing the ATI software -- either MMC
8.1 or 8.9 or 9.x -- in a system with Windows 98SE and an AIW Radeon 8500DV.

The driver and DAO installs ok, but when installing MMC, I get the
following error message:

Error 0x8002000B
Invalid Index

Installation Terminated

Anyone know what's causing this? I've searched Google, and I've found
lots of people having the problem, but no solution (I've tried some
suggested solutions, and they don't work). If I install immediately
after installing Windows 98SE on a blank hard drive, it works, but if I
have updated DirectX, Windows Media Player or IE, it will fail (dot-Net
Framework, thought by some to be a factor, is not installed at all and
it still fails). Looks like a conflict between one of the Microsoft
updates and the ATI software. Can anyone confirm this, and is there a
reasonable workaround?

Thanks

You've installed Windows Media Encoder 7.1, Barry? AFAIK it's a
requirement for MMC 8.x & 9.x in W98SE. Also, MMC 9.x is not
supported under W98SE.

I installed the Windows Media Player update, which includes the Windows
Media Codecs. As far as I know, only the codecs are required, not the
full Windows media encoder package (especially for 8.1, see next paragraph).

The problem occurs with MMC 8.1, 8.9 and 9.1 -- all three. 8.1 is from
an ATI pressed CD, the others were downloaded.

9.1 is not supported under 98SE but does work (however, it's irrelevant
to the question at hand).

This is an installation problem, an issue not with MMC itself, but with
the installation setup program. Using the actual ATI pressed CD, the
problem does occur and installation is aborted. BUT, if you go into the
MMC directly and manually run SETUP.EXE, it installs fine. And it
subsequently works fine. But you can't install it from the "main" setup
program (the one that autoruns when you insert the CD and the
automatically installs all of the various components in sequence).

It's clearly a conflict between some microsoft component and the ATI
installer. If you start with a blank hard drive, install Windows 98SE,
then install the ATI software, there is no problem. But if you install
Windows, then upgrade IE to 6.x, upgrade DirectX to 9.0b and upgrade
Windows Media Player to 9, then try to install the ATI software, this
happens (at least on this system). I didn't get to the point of
determining which of these 3 upgrades caused the problem. But I'm not
the only one seeing it, if you do a google search, you can find entire
threads on this subject -- however, with no solution posted, although
many people report the problem.

Have you tried http://consumer.installshield.com/, Barry? AIR when I
was having problems installing the earlier Cat 3.xs in W98SE updating
some of the installer components helped.

There are also documented incompatibilities with different versions of
M$ Installer: do a search on microsoft.com for installation problems
with Intellitype for more info.
