Help - How do I make the XP Pro server share the Internet ?

O

Okienuah

We have a home network with one server and four users. The server was using
Windows 98SE for a long time. The other four PCs were running Windows XP
Pro. File share and Internet share was working ok. Now, here is the
problem...

We were so happy with the XP Pro, that we decided to replace the common
server running Windows 98SE with Windows XP Pro. File transfer and common
printer use is OK, but Internet share sometime works and sometime it takes
about 10 minutes to get started !!

Server has the following setups:
----------------------------------
1) DSL Connection setups are
following...........................................................
a) General - Properties
1. Advanced - (un-checked) "Protect my computer......."
(checked) "Allow other network users connect
thru this...."
(un-checked) "Allow other network users to
control ...."
2. Authentication -
All checked
General -
Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) - Properties
Obtain IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically
Alternate Configuration -
Automatic private IP address
b} Support
Address type - Assigned by DHCP
IP Address - (--.---.--.233)
Subnet Mask - 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway - (--.---.--.254)
Details
Physical Address... thru... WINS Server - all are assigned

2) Local Area Connection setups are following
....................................................
a) General - Properties
1. Advanced - (blank) "Protect my computer......."
(un-checked) "Allow other network users
connect thru this..."
(blank) "Allow other network users to control
....."
2. Authentication -
All checked
General -
Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) - Properties
Use the following IP address:
IP address: 192 168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Use the following DNS server addresses:
Preferred DNS server (blank)
Alternate DNS server (blank)
Alternate Configuration -
Automatic private IP address
b) Support
Address type - Assigned by DHCP
IP Address - (192.168.0.1)
Subnet Mask - 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway - (blank)
Details
Physical Address, IP address & Subnet Mask assigned

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
Nothing was changed for the other User PCs since they were running OK on
file transfer and Internet access.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
All Firewalls are set at Medium for Internet Zone Security & Trusted Zone
Security.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------
What do we need to do, to Windows XP Pro, to make Internet Sharing work fast
similar to Windows 98SE? Is there some settings need to be changed at the
server
or to all individual user PCs? Appreciate any suggestions.

Hi
You might need to reconfigure ICS through WinXP using WinXP ICS.
However there are better options.

Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing -

Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...? -

The page above was written by me ages ago. You might ignore the prices and
Brand recommendations. The principles however are still the same.

Does the DHCP IP address and the default Gateway has to have the
same number?

Address type - Assigned by DHCP
IP Address - (--.---.--.233)
Subnet Mask - 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway - (--.---.--.254)

Appreciate the help.
