I was helping a friend of mine with her PC. Bad shape. I had to order
the Win XP SP2 Cd to get it to load on her system. She was swollen
with adware/spyware and a few trojans. Before I started anything, I
did a Restore backup, and a reg back up.
We got her system all cleaned all update files, removed all the
viruses, and spyware/adware
I thought I had deleted the reg backup file, but must have somehow
activated ( probably not paying attention) anyway the same is
crashing. It keeps going into a memory dump. I couldn't get back to
normal windows, so I went to the safe mode and thought that if I just
restarted the reg back up file, at least I had a good starting point.
For some reason that didn't help, so I tried to go to the restore
progam but I can't get the help screen to come up.
Other then doing a complete reload of windows, can anyone else come up
with some possible fixes, maybe something to do with the Win xp CD?I
told her I would try and get the PC back to her by Monday with no or
verly lost of what she has.

Help , Please Help.

Try doing a repair install (if she has the installation disk).

A Windows 'System restore' is not the best course of action when dealing
with virus/trojan/worm infections because they can get into the restore
points.. as the other reply suggests, try a repair install..

Ok, I tried to do the repair job, and it worked to some extent,
however, I keep getting the checkdisk and once I do boot up I am
getting a message that the atl.dll file is bad. I looked at the file
and it is located in the system 32 directory with 0 bits. Is there a
way to replace it with a good file?
Thanks for the help. At least we are almost back to where we were
before the explosion of the virus....

ati.dll is the graphic drivers, update your graphics
drivers. One way to do this is to uninstall the graphics
card using device manager and reboot.

Delete the file. Windows File Protection should replace it with a "good"
copy from .\%windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386\. If it doesn't, find and copy
the file to the system32 folder.

Sharon, Jim
Thanks for the help, that did take care of my video problem also.
Right now I am trying to run an anti-virus program on the system. For
some reason it has been coming up saying that the product key is not
valid. That I know is valid. I tried to change it to back to what it
should be but I went into a memory dump. I figure if I can get rid of
the viruses, I should be able to fix the other problems. I am still
hoping not to have to do a complete wipe out and reload.

I can't say for sure, I know at least one and that is win32.hybris.b
I am now running an antivirus program to see how many more viruses
there are. This is one sick puppy..:(

Which virus program?

antidote. The pc wouldn't let me load any a/v's. I had the Grisoft
AVG program, but everytime I tried to load it, it went all the way
through to the end and then gave me an error that a file was corrupt
or bad. The file always changed when I was trying to reload.

What Antivirus program are you using? Norton, AVG, McAffee, other?

I really need a new monitor.

You rarely make mistakes like that so figured something was up. Sounds like
it is time to do some shopping. Hope that you find what you want at a
reasonable price.

Thanks for the comment. Truth is I was really tired and the
eyes just saw ati because that is what I expected to see.
