HELP HELP HELP!! - USB & IEEE Problems.

For some wiered reason when I connect a new USB device or IEEE (FireWire)
device, windows recognizes the device was hotplugeed, it writes its name but
starts the NEW HARDWARE WIZARD and looks for the drivers and at the end does
not find them even though I installed the software properly.

It happned with a disk on key, a card reader and I could live without them.
But now, I bought an iPOD and I can't use it! damn.

Can someone please help??? PLEASE?

If for any reason I am not describing my problem clearly please ask for
clarification..

When XP looks for the drivers, does it give you a "data is invalid" error?

Ari, now here's a prob which features often in this ng, and just happened to
me again tonight -
Seems like EVERY USB port requires a unique installation (guesswork, with
justification).

I've had my one (of 6) USB 1.1 ports holding what (logically) is the
keyboard connector (since the other connector is in PS2 mouse orifice) of my
Logitech radio controller.
Tonight, took my PC apart to take out/replace a PCI card. Put back together,
accidentally connected the Logitech USB lead to a different USB port.
Strange result. Mouse didn't work (keyboard did) but up came the New
Hardware Detected" thingy, ran its routines for all Logitech kit
(controller, mouse, keyboard), and failed.
Still live, switched USB connector to original port. Keyboard and mouse now
work fine (no re-boot, no driver re-load).

NOTE the incongruity - you'd expect the Mouse to work (since the radio
controller connection was to PS2 mouse port) but it did not. Conversely, you
would expect the Keyboard NOT to work, since the controller was connected to
a different port from the original. It did work. And, having "hot-switched"
the USB ports - both mouse and keyboard worked on the ports on the Logitech
drivers were installed.

I suggest the following, from experience and prior evidence from other
posters - unless USB kit has generic (Microsoft) drivers, every bit of USB
kit requires installation for each individual USB port. And, it makes sense
to have a "standard" piece of kit (printer, whatever) connected to the same
USB port whenever it is used.

you installed it for one USB port. Did you reconnect to the same port?
Probably not, hence the problem. At least, as far as I've (inadvertently)
experienced, on more than one occasion.

Nope... it just opens the new hardware found wizard and doesn't find the
drivers nowhere.

Dear dear Len,

Thank you very much for trying to help and for the long post.
The problem you are describing I have experienced it in the past and learnt
from that that indeed (for some starnge reason) you HAVE to reconect each USB
device back to its own port.

My problem now is with NEW DEVICES. I received a universal card reader with
my mobile phone, connected it to my computer, the "dim-dum" sound sounded, it
wrote that it found the device and its name but started the NEW HARDWARE
WIZARD and looked for the drivers and couldn't find them. Same happened to me
with a disk on key I got as a present... both devices I left on my shelf
unused as I don't really need them... but now, I bought an iPOD and again,
the whole procedure and I can't use it!!! It was never connected to my comp
before so it is not the problem YOU described. I guess it is some problem
with my USB and IEEE port drivers... dunno what to do... I don't know what to
try anymore.

Someone in another forum recomended to uninstall the IEEE port and reinstall
it, and now after starting the computer without anything connected to it the
comp writes me that it finds a new hardware - NIC1394 (I guess it is my IEEE
port) and again, doesn't find drivers for it... what to do????? HELP!
