help disabling download of new version of activex controls

Hello,

I can't seem to find the security or advanced setting that would
prevent IE 6 from even trying to download an update to an
installed activex control.

This is annoying because I am on dial-up, and IE will _first_
download say the new Flash player (seems there's been a lot of new
versions of that lately), and _then_ prompt for it to be installed
or not. I want it to not even try to download, or at least prompt
before starting.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks.

Interesting information there, but none that seems to apply.

I don't want to disable ActiveX, simply disable the automatic
download that takes place if there is a newer version available.

My current settings are:

- Download signed ActiveX controls = prompt
But I can't remember ever seeing that prompt. Downloads take
place automatically, and _then_ IE prompts if I want it installed,
to which I say No most of the time, signed or not.
- Download unsigned ActiveX controls = Disable
- Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe =
Disable
- Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins = Enable
- Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting = Enable

Also, Install On Demand for both IE and Other are disabled.

Flash is the best example. I have the Flash 4 control installed.
The current version is 7. On most web sites that use some Flash,
IE downloads something (I know this because I am on dial-up and it
is big enough to take all bandwidth for several seconds). Then I
am prompted if I want to install it, which I decline. Then
everything displays fine (most people are actually still creating
content with Flash 4, and anyways, it is upwards compatible).

I've set Download signed ActiveX controls to Disable as a
workaround. It is not exactly the behavior I would want, but it is
better.

Mark,
There are several ways to suppress the Flash ads .....
1) add the below entries to your HOSTS file
127.0.0.1 active.macromedia.com
127.0.0.1 download.macromedia.com
127.0.0.1 sdc.shockwave.com
127.0.0.1 macromedia.speedera.net

2) Use AdShield (pop-up blocker) [freeware]
