My computer lost power while it was in S3 sleep. When I booted back up
I got the Active Desktop Safe Mode screen. When I pressed the button
to restore my AD I got a script error:
"Object doesn't support this property or method."
Multiple reboots won't fix it.
I looked in \Doc...s and Setting\me\app...data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Desktop.htt and found the script error pointing to this line:
<input ID=ID5 type="submit" onClick="suih.ResetSafeMode();"
value="Restore my Active Desktop">
I checked that line against \Windows\Web\safemode.htt (it's source
file) and it was the same. I also checked the source file against a
Win2K version that's on another partition and it was also the same.
I found out that suih.ResetSafeMode is an undocumented subroutine call
to \Windows\System32\shdocvw.dll. I tried reregistering the dll via
regsvr32 and that did not fix the problem.
I'd like to fix the problem the right way, if possible.
If I can't do that, I know I can probably just turn active desktop
back on in the registry and put my objects back on it. Can anyone
tell me where Windows hides the backup that it makes of Desktop.htt
so it can restore it, before it replaces it with the safemode warning
version?

XP Pro SP2 and all updates as of today. Including Windows Defender.
I've had the AD safe mode screen appear in the past when I had
improper shutdowns and was always able to click the button
successfully.

dated 8/4/2004 3:56 am. 549,376 bytes.
It's been a long time since I had one of these messages and I've made
lots of changes to the system since then so I can't begin to guess at
something I might have done to cause this.
