Help, cannot open jpg pictures anymore

K

Kevin J. Nielsen

I copied some jpg pictures from a cd to a folder in my hard drive which
already contained some jpg's. When I was done copying , I removed the CD
and viewed the pictures I just copied. I was able to view them all no
problem. Later that evening I tried to view them again and only about 8 out
of 100 are viewable, even the pictures that were in that folder previously
are no longer viewable. All the files show the correct filename and
filesize but the unviewable ones dont show the resolution of the picture in
windows explorer the way the viewable pictures do and they dont show
thumbnails when I select to view thumbnails.

When I double click on the file, windows picture and fax viewer says "no
preview available". When I try to open the file with roxio photosuite 7 I
get the message "cant open file". When I try to open the jpg with internet
explorer, all I get is a small box with a red X in it. When I try to open
the jpg with iPhoto Plus, I get the message "unable to open {filename}
Unknown file format. [270:5:4]".

I dont know if it has anything to do with it but I have hide folders xp
installed and I had it unlocked at the time I copied the pictures. I
unlocked it again and I still cannot view the pictures. The folder I have
my jpg's in is not one of my hidden folders in hide folders xp.

Thank You

Kevin

Copy one of the picture files that you can't view to the following folder:
C:\Windows\Temp
After the file has been copied see if you can view it using any and all the
applications you mentioned.

I did that and the picture is still unviewable. Thanks anyway

OK, it could be the files are being corrupted during the file copy process.
Try a file comparison utility to see if the file (.jpg) on the CD matches
the same file on your after hard drive after copying it from the CD.

If you had read my entire post you would have read this: "When I was done
copying , I removed the CD and viewed the pictures I just copied. I was
able to view them all no problem.

So it was a good copy. The CD I copied them from was a cd rw from my
digital camera, I have already reformatted the cd so I cannot recopy them.

Also, that still doesnt explain why the pictures that were in that
folder previous to the copy operation are not viewable anymore.

Thank You for your time

Because on the first posting of this message nobody would answer my
question, they were all too concerned that my outlook express was out of
date. I figured that nobody took my question seriously because I was out of
date so I updated and reposted in the hopes that someone would actually read
about my problem and I might actually get some help.

Thank You

Sorry about that, as you can read in my previous post, that is why I
reposted the first time and I tried to do a crosspost but it only went to

i am too. and mine seems to have other oddities. dig this:

* i have various pic folders on my laptop. all used to open just fine with
WP&FV by double clicking on a thumbnail.
* months ago, i started scanning family pix with a flatbed scanner, into a
folder on my husband's desktop. still no prob opening those pix with WP&FV by
a double click.
* THEN, i scanned some pix for a friend, burned them to a CD, took the
laptop with CD to her house to preview. did just fine. left the Cd with her &
came home.
* ever since then, cannot open my scanned family pix with WP&FV at all, get
the no preview available msg, & can open with almost any other program by
right clicking. not convenient for me at all.
* i tried creating a new folder on my desktop or C drive, did a copy/paste
of all scanned family pix into them & they still will not open.
* SO, i tried opening older & newer pix in other folders. did fine with
double clicking & opened with WP&FV.
* THEN, i did a copy/paste of one from another folder that did open with a
double click into WP&FV, into the scanned family pix folder & it would not
open.
* THEN, i did a copy/paste of one from the scanned family folder that would
not open anymore, put it into a different existing folder of successfully
opening pix & it DID open.

so........there is no rhyme or reason as to why these pix in that folder (or
any other folders i open new for them to fix the problem) will not open. i
hope someone can help cuz this is SO inconvenient & annoying & totally
inconsistent.

i saw a similarity with kevin in the use of a CD (that i burned the scanned
pix onto). maybe that's the probl dont know.

thanks for your help!

It sounds as tho your file associations for the JPGs has changed. Try right
clicking on one of the pic.s & choose Open With....direct it to open with
whatever program you choose.

already did that numerous times. but the pix in the scanned family folder (no
matter what it is or where it's located) still wont open with WP&FV whether
dbl clicked or not. also tried to chg it at Tools, Folder Options, etc.

and the fact that all other pix in my pc (not in that folder) & that
folder's pix that are moved to any other folder - all do open ok with WP&FV
with a dbl click. and other folders' pix moved to the scanned family pix
folder WONT open, just like the others in that folder.

no consistency. does not make sense.

windows explorer the way the viewable pictures do and they dont show
thumbnails when I select to view thumbnails.

When I double click on the file, windows picture and fax viewer
says
"no
preview available". When I try to open the file with roxio
photosuite
7 I
get the message "cant open file". When I try to open the jpg with
internet
explorer, all I get is a small box with a red X in it. When I try
to
open
the jpg with iPhoto Plus, I get the message "unable to open
{filename}
Unknown file format. [270:5:4]".

I dont know if it has anything to do with it but I have hide
folders xp
installed and I had it unlocked at the time I copied the pictures.
I
unlocked it again and I still cannot view the pictures. The folder
I
have
my jpg's in is not one of my hidden folders in hide folders xp.

Thank You

Kevin

Okay, not an expert but a veteran of various problems,
and this is what I'd try based on your statement above:
_first_, save my entire system;
then, copy/paste a selection of other pix;
if that works, copy/paste all the rest;
if that works too, destroy the original folder;
don't destroy my backup until time has passed and
no further puzzling things have happened.

If at some point this process _doesn't_ work:
stop;
restore my entire system from the above backup;
find someone who can suggest something else.
