headphones

I have a compaq pressario s4020wm pc with series 7500. I
can not get headphones to work off of the plug in on the
speaker. In order to use headphones I have to unplug the
speaker from the rear of the cpu and plug headphones in
there. Is there a way to get the headphones to work off
the speaker jack as most of the other pcs I have owned
worked? The speakers are JBL Platinum Series.

Just as a quick test, look in the soundcard's settings and, if available,
switch modes from "digital" to "analog" - or the opposite - and see if
this affects the situation.
