Heading Numbers Disappearing during "Save As"

I have a template with several heading styles that are
numbered. For example:
I. Heading One
A. Heading Two
1. Heading Three
The problem I'm having is that the docs using this
template are fine until we make revisions and use
the "Save As" feature. Every time we do the "Save As" the
numbers are stripped from the headings in the new doc. For
example:
Heading One
Heading Two
Heading Three
If I open the style modifier in the template and the
original document, the heading styles are numbered, but if
I open the style modifier in the new document, they are
not.

I can open the template organizer, however, and copy the
heading styles from the template (or original doc) back
into the new doc and they update fine. But this is a
tedious work-around, and it seems that since the new doc
has the template attached I shouldn't have to do this.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Are you sure when you choose save as that it is set to
Word document and not perhaps another format. You can also
write a macro to update styles automatically if styles do
get corrupt which might be easier than doing it manually.
