header/footer box not coming up

I'm trying to insert filename and path into a footer; however, when I click
on header/footer, the pop-up box where I would select filename and path
doesn't appear. Just an empty small gray box comes up. Any help out there?

Possibly you've overwritten the Normal.dot template with a
regular document? Close Word, and rename your Normal.dot
template as described in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm . Start
Word, and try to insert an autotext. If it works, you can copy
your customizations from the old normal.dot to the new one by
using the Organizer tool as described in the aforementioned article.
