header and footer page numbers

M page numbers in my header are showing as 'highlighted' ie in a black box
instead of a dim grey box - what do I switch off? It's very eye catching.

Are you really using Print Preview to edit documents? It is certainly
possible, but usually people stick to Print *Layout* view (or Normal/Draft).

Print Preview can be displayed by pressing Ctrl+F2. It shows the document as
it will print, that is, without nonprinting marks (which can be displayed by
pressing Ctrl+Shift+8).

If you can see the formatting in Print Preview, then I'd say that shading
has been applied to the page number; this can easily be cleared. For
example, you can check if the Page Number character style has shading
applied to it; if it does, clear it from the style (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/ModifyAStyle.html). Alternatively,
activate the header/footer area and then select the page number directly. In
the Borders and Shading dialog box, set the "Fill" option to "No Color" (on
the Shading tab).

Sorry I am using print layout view but I have tried both suggestions below
and it is still not switching it off. Even new docs when I add page numbers
are 'highlighted' so it must be something to do with my global template?
