HDD stops using UltraDMA - only PIO - crazy slow mode

Hi,
I've just found out that my 80 GB hard drive with system fell down to PIO
mode instead of Ultra DMA - the result is nearly unusable (even the screen
goes to sleep mode before windows desktop finally shows :( )
It could have something in common with new Lite-On SOHW 1763 DVD writer I
bought and placed on same IDE channel as slave (replacing my CD burner from
TEAC), but even after disconnection of the writer it does not restart in
U-DMA mode - also it cannot be chosen or forced by listboxes in computer
management console.

Please help, it's urgent :)

IDE ATA and ATAPI disks use PIO mode after multiple time-out or CRC errors occur

Hmm, I was kind of lazy to write that I have of course all the service packs
for XP, except for some services/software like windows journal I would never
use, so this post does not help me much :(
