HDD light stays on

Normally the HDD light on the front of the computer stays on or flashes when
it is working but turns off when the computer is inactive. Starting several
days ago the light stays on the whole time the computer is on (even when
nothing is running). I think this started after I loaded Norton Systemworks
Premier 2005 but I'm not sure.

1. Does it harm the HDD to have it on all the time. (I'm assuming that the
light being on all the time means that the HDD is on and spinnning).
2. Is there anything I can do to get it back to where the HDD turns off
when not being used.

Any information on this subject will be appreciated. Thanks Mac

Windows XP Home SP2, 1 gig ram, WD 80 gig HDD.

The only thing I can think of is try opening up your PC and see if fth
cables are firmly connected and not loose. Do the same for the powe
connector. Another thing you can try is replace the cable with a ne
one and hopefully that will solve it. If not, you might have to contac
your hard drive manufacturer. :

Had a similar problem with the wife's pc. It would come on after a couple of
hours, finally determined it was her CD-R/RW drive was causing it, unhooked
it completely no more problems. Found the solution after some extensive
researching. Hope this may help.

That LED means the HD is being accessed. If the HD were spinning but idle,
the LED would be dark.

If you suspect Norton, uninstall it then reboot, and see if the LED is
again dark. Once upon a time, I thought Norton made some good products;
but, that was back in the 20th century.

Ive also seen indexers like find fast cause this problem.

Try booting into safe mode. If the hard drive does not run constant then its
most likely software.

Like someone mentioned it could be your antivirus. You dont have to
uninstall the antivirus just run msconfig and disable the start up items and
services for it. You can then see if it fixes it. Thats alot easier then
removing it incase it isnt the problem.
