HDD Configuration

**Hi, I asked this question below on the 25/07/07 in this group.**

------------------------------------
Hi All
Is it possible to have;
2 X...80gb sataII HDD's [8mb cache] in raid 0 (O/S)
1 X...400gb sataII HDD [16mb cache] (Data)
If so, what's the best config...Master/Primary...etc. and would there be a
problem with the difference in Cache sizes?
------------------------------------

**And I got this answer below**

------------------------------------
SATA Drives no longer use the Master/Slave Scenario. So if you have a
Raid Controller and an extra sata connector on
your Motherboard then sure you shouldnt have any problems. Cache sizes
should have very little effect if any.

------------------------------------

** I was then told on another forum that the O/S should not be in raid
config, but on it's own seperate drive, as I was hoping that the O/S could
be mirrored, to necessitate the need for re-installing WinXp if one of the
80gb HDD's failed??
Maybe the replier didn't notice (O/S) at the end!!**

Can anyone resolve this for me?

You said RAID 0 (data striping) and not RAID 1 (disk mirroring) for
your O/S installation.

With RAID 0 on 2 drives a failure of either drive (basically twice the
probability of the failure of a single drive) renders the drive
contents unusable.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck

Hi Ron

"Sorry" my typo mistake. I do understand the difference between striping and
mirroring. Can you tell me if it's possible to have an O/S mirrored though?

It's quite common to have the OS mirrored (RAID 1).

Cheers,

Cliff
